Recording & Playback
Record audio, camera, and screen, and watch or listen to recordings without leaving the conversation with your AI assistant.
Recording & Playback
The VIDTREO MCP includes two MCP Apps — interactive pages the assistant shows inside the conversation:
- The recorder (
record) — built on the VIDTREO Recorder web component. It records and uploads to your workspace like any other VIDTREO recording, using the environment's settings. - The player (
play) — built on the VIDTREO Player web components. It streams a video or an audio directly from VIDTREO storage.
Claude on the web and Claude Desktop display both. In clients that do not display MCP Apps, such as Claude Code, the assistant gives you a link to the same page in the VIDTREO dashboard instead.
Recording
Ask for a recording in plain words:
- "Record an audio note called Weekly update"
- "I want to record my camera for the Acme interview"
- "Record my screen in the Product demos environment"
The assistant asks for anything you did not say: the title is always yours to choose (it never invents one), and it asks for the mode or the environment when they are not clear.
Modes
| Mode | Records | Claude (web) | Claude Desktop |
|---|---|---|---|
audio | Microphone only | In the conversation | In the conversation |
camera | Camera and microphone | In the conversation when the browser grants camera access | Continues in VIDTREO (Claude Desktop does not grant camera access to apps) |
screen | Screen and microphone | Continues in VIDTREO | Continues in VIDTREO |
camera_screen | Screen and camera together | Continues in VIDTREO | Continues in VIDTREO |
Screen capture is not available to apps inside an assistant, so screen recordings always continue in VIDTREO.
Recording in the Conversation
The assistant shows the VIDTREO recorder. The first time, your client asks for permission to use the microphone (and the camera, for camera).
Start and stop the recording in the recorder, the same way as in any VIDTREO integration.
The recording uploads to VIDTREO automatically and is renamed to the title you chose. The recorder shows Ready: your title.
Continuing in VIDTREO
For screen recordings — and camera recordings when the client does not grant camera access — the conversation shows a Record in Vidtreo button instead of the recorder.
Click Record in Vidtreo. The VIDTREO dashboard opens in your browser, in the recorder of the right environment.
Record and upload in the dashboard. Meanwhile the button in the conversation shows Waiting for recording…
As soon as the new recording appears in the environment, the app renames it to your title and shows Recording ready and Ready: your title.
The app checks every 5 seconds for up to 30 minutes, and only counts a recording created after you clicked the button. If you finish later, ask the assistant to look for it again.
Where Recordings Go
- The environment you named in the conversation
- Otherwise, your default environment (Set as default in the dashboard, or "record into this environment from now on" in the chat)
- Otherwise, the first environment your account can access
The recording uses that environment's settings — quality, audio, AI transcription — and its webhooks fire as usual, so a recording made from the assistant reaches your systems like any other. If the environment has Intelligence lenses with auto-analyze on, the recording is analyzed automatically.
Messages
| Message | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Ready: title | The recording is uploaded and named |
This app cannot use your camera here. | The client denied camera access; use Record in Vidtreo |
Screen recording is not available in this app. | Screen modes always continue in VIDTREO |
Finish recording in the Vidtreo tab. It will show up here. | The app is waiting for the dashboard recording |
No new recording appeared. Ask the assistant to look again once you finish. | 30 minutes passed without a new recording in the environment |
Uploaded, but it could not be named "…". | The recording is saved with its default name; ask the assistant to rename it |
Could not open your browser. Open this link yourself: … | The client blocked the link; open it manually |
In clients without MCP Apps, record returns a link to the dashboard recorder (/videos/new or, for audio, /audios/new, with the environment already selected). Record there, then ask the assistant to rename the recording if you want a specific title.
Playback
Ask to watch or listen:
- "Play the onboarding video"
- "Let me hear yesterday's customer call"
The assistant finds the recording (with search_videos or search_audios) and calls play, which shows:
- For videos — the VIDTREO video player, with the title above it
- For audios — the VIDTREO audio player card, with the title and duration
The media streams directly from VIDTREO storage through a temporary link. The link is renewed a minute before it expires, keeping your position and whether the recording was paused, so long recordings play without interruption.
The player is for you, not for the assistant: it cannot watch or listen to the recording. To answer questions about its content, the assistant reads the transcript (get_video_transcript, get_audio_transcript) or, for videos, uses an Intelligence analysis.
Privacy and Permissions
The recorder and player run in a sandbox controlled by your client and only get what they need:
| App | Asks for | Network access |
|---|---|---|
| Recorder | Camera and microphone | The VIDTREO API, VIDTREO storage (to upload), and unpkg.com (the recorder's icons) |
| Player | Nothing | VIDTREO storage (to stream) |
- The recorder never receives your sign-in token: to upload, it asks for a short-lived upload token for the chosen environment.
- Upload and playback links are passed to the apps only. They do not appear in the conversation, and the assistant never sees them.
- When VIDTREO releases a new version of an app, clients load it instead of a cached copy.
